A Hymn for Saturday Nights
Mar 06, 2023Our church observed The Lord's Supper yesterday and my pastor (also my husband) chose to dedicate the sermon to the topic of The Lord's Supper as well.
I was reminded of the value of examining my heart before communion– even as early as Saturday night.
We can take that one step further, too.
Why not prepare our hearts for worship every Sunday as early as Saturday night? We all know how hectic Sunday mornings can be!
If you have kids at home, think of all the work that goes into your day before sitting down in the pew.
And if you teach or set up the church or bring baked goods or brew the coffee or anything else on Sunday morning, it's easy to let our minds and hearts be consumed with a lot of other things that distract us from the mindset we find in Psalm 139:
Search me, O God, and know my heart!
Try me and know my thoughts!
And see if there be any grievous way in me,
and lead me in the way everlasting!
This Saturday night, I encourage you to be intentional about preparing your heart for the Lord's Day.
A good hymn to help you with that is "Search Me, O God" by J. Edwin Orr.
Search Me, O God
by J. Edwin Orr
Search me, O God, and know my heart today;
Try me, O Savior, know my thoughts, I pray.
See if there be some wicked way in me;
Cleanse me from ev'ry sin and set me free.
I praise thee, Lord, for cleansing me from sin;
Fulfill thy Word, and make me pure within.
Fill me with fire where once I burned with shame;
Grant my desire to magnify thy name.
Lord, take my life and make it wholly thine;
Fill my poor heart with thy great love divine.
Take all my will, my passion, self, and pride;
I now surrender; Lord, in me abide.
