A Hymn for Moments of Rest
Jul 31, 2024In the past three months (roughly), we've enjoyed visits from out of state family and friends six times, have taken trips to see family twice, and have participated in or attended funerals of church members — or parents of church members —four times.
It's been a lot.
As I look ahead to the month of August, I'm seeing a bit more blank space on the calendar.
Now calendars can change and it's possible to have spiritual rest in busy seasons. But when I see a little extra blank space on my calendar, I feel just a little more free to take that rest.
As I anticipate a little more down time in coming days, I want to remember a good hymn to help me settle down a bit and rest more in Jesus.
Jesus, I Am Resting, Resting is a favorite of mine and so is The Haven of Rest, but right now I'm remembering Frances Ridley Havergal's hymn, Like a River Glorious.
If you need a little extra rest right now — maybe some processing time for different events that have happened in your own life or at a national level — this may be just the hymn for you, too.
Like a River Glorious
by Frances Ridley Havergal
Like a river, glorious
Is God’s perfect peace,
Over all victorious
In its bright increase;
Perfect, yet it floweth
Fuller every day,
Perfect, yet it groweth
Deeper all the way.
Refrain:
Stayed upon Christ Jesus,
Hearts are fully blest;
Finding, as He promised,
Perfect peace and rest.
Hidden in the hollow
Of His blessed hand,
Never foe can follow,
Never traitor stand;
Not a surge of worry,
Not a shade of care,
Not a blast of hurry
Touch the spirit there.
Every joy or trial
Falleth from above,
Traced upon our dial
By the Sun of Love.
We may trust Him fully
All for us to do;
They who trust Him wholly
Find Him wholly true.
