Everyday Faithfulness

Thomas Obadiah Chisholm was born in a log cabin in Kentucky in 1866. For unknown reasons, he was unable to attend school. That didn’t stop him from learning, though! He was determined to teach himself at home whenever he had the opportunity.

When he finally entered a classroom, it wasn’t as a student—it was as a self-taught teacher. He was only 16!

By age 21, he had become a newspaper editor, and by age 27, he had written his first hymn.

Having just been born again, he wrote "Oh, To Be Like Thee" in his newfound zeal as a Christian.

Thirty years later, at age 57, Thomas penned "Great Is Thy Faithfulness," possibly his most famous hymn among his 800 published poems.

The hymn was inspired by the Old Testament book of Lamentations 3:22-23, which says, "Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness."

Unlike many hymns that were born out of dramatic life experiences, "Great Is Thy Faithfulness" was a simple expression of Chisholm's praise for God’s faithfulness through the everyday health struggles and financial difficulties.

Great is Thy faithfulness, O God, my Father;
There is no shadow of turning with Thee.
Thou changest not, Thy compassions, they fail not;
As Thou hast been, Thou forever will be.
