THE WONDROUS STORY: 2024 JOURNEY THROUGH FAVORITE HYMNS

Truth #7: We have a glorious future with Christ, our King.

Peace in Tragedy

Shortly after the death of his son, Horatio G. Spafford (1828–1888), a successful Chicago lawyer and devout Christian, lost his fortune in the Great Chicago Fire of 1871.

Seeking rest for his wife and four daughters and hoping to assist his friend Dwight L. Moody in evangelism,  Spafford planned a family trip to Europe.

Business matters delayed him, so he sent his family ahead expecting to follow soon after.

On November 22, the ship his family was on was struck by an English vessel and sank in just 12 minutes.

Days later, survivors reached Cardiff, Wales, where Mrs. Spafford sent her husband the heartbreaking message: “Saved alone.”

Spafford immediately left to join his wife. As his ship neared the area where his daughters drowned, he penned the hymn "It Is Well with My Soul."

It Is Well With My Soul
By Horatio Spafford, 1828-1888 (1873)

When peace, like a river, attendeth my way,
When sorrows, like sea billows, roll;
Whatever my lot, thou hast taught me to say,
It is well, it is well with my soul.

Isa. 66:12; Is. 48:18; Phil. 4:11; John 14:27

Refrain:
It is well with my soul,
it is well, it is well with my soul.

Phil. 4:7

Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come,
Let this blest assurance control,
That Christ has regarded my helpless estate,
And hath shed his own blood for my soul. [Refrain]

1 Peter 5:8; Col. 3:15; Rom. 5:8; Col. 1:20

My sin -- oh, the bliss of this glorious thought:
My sin, not in part but the whole,
Is nailed to the cross, and I bear it no more,
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul! [Refrain]

Ps. 103:12; Col. 2:14; Matt. 26:28

And Lord, haste the day when my faith shall be sight,
The clouds be rolled back as a scroll,
The trump shall resound, and the Lord shall descend,
"Even so," it is well with my soul. [Refrain]

2 Cor. 5:7;  Rev. 6:14; 1 Thess. 4:16-17; 1 Cor. 15:52; Rev. 21:4
