The Song of Saints: A Historical Journey Through Our Hymns

 PART ONE: BIBLICAL HYMNS

A Glimpse of Heaven

In the eighth century B.C. the prophet Isaiah caught a glimpse of Heaven and recorded his vision of angels crying, “Holy, holy, holy to the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of His glory.”

Over 700 years later, the apostle John caught a glimpse of Heaven, too, and recorded his vision of the living beings at the throne of God worshiping and crying “Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come!”

With these two glimpses of the throne of God recorded in Scripture, we get a sneak preview of the song we’ll be singing at the throne of God when we finally arrive.

We don’t have all the lyrics to this biblical hymn yet (who knows what our own vision of the Lord will inspire?) but we do have Reginald Heber’s familiar and majestic hymn, “Holy, Holy, Holy.”

Written in 1826, this beautiful hymn text helps us worship the Lord now while also practicing for that heavenly choir we get to join one day — with perfect voices!

Reginald Heber was born in Cheshire, England and became an award-winning poet and an Anglican bishop not long after that. He wrote “Holy, Holy, Holy” for Trinity Sunday.

He wrote “Holy, Holy, Holy” for Trinity Sunday — each proclamation of "holy" praising the three persons of the Godhead: God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit.

Holy, Holy, Holy

by Reginald Heber, 1783-1826

Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!
Early in the morning our song shall rise to Thee;
Holy, holy, holy! merciful and mighty!
God in three Persons, blessed Trinity!

 Leviticus 19:1-2; Isaiah 6:3; Revelation 4:8; Psalm 5:3; Psalm 103:8

Holy, holy, holy! all the saints adore Thee,
Casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea;
Cherubim and seraphim falling down before Thee,
Who wert, and art, and evermore shalt be.

Deuteronomy 6:5; Revelation 4:10-11; Psalm 103:20; Revelation 4:8; Revelation 16:5; Revelation 1:8

Holy, holy, holy! though the darkness hide Thee,
Though the eye of sinful man Thy glory may not see;
Only Thou art holy; there is none beside Thee,
Perfect in power, in love and purity.

Psalm 18:11; Exodus 33:20; Romans 3:23; 1 Samuel 2:2; Exodus 15:11; Deuteronomy 32:4

Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!
All Thy works shall praise Thy name, in earth, and sky, and sea;
Holy, holy, holy! merciful and mighty!
God in three Persons, blessed Trinity!

Exodus 6:3; Psalm 69:34; Revelation 15:3; Psalm 89:8; Revelation 19:6
