What Happens When We Embrace God's Plan for Hymns

Feb 18, 2025

God has given us a beautiful gift in hymns—one that strengthens our faith, makes Scripture personal, and fills our hearts with praise and truth just when we need it the most. When we embrace hymns as part of our worship and daily lives, we experience incredible spiritual benefits. Here are a few that come to my mind but you'll likely think of more!

Biblical Truth Moves from Our Heads to Our Hearts
It was during my single years in South Carolina that I developed a deep love for hymns and their history. I discovered they helped me move biblical truth from my brain and into my heart and helped me have an even more personal relationship with Jesus.

Hymns are full of emotion and help us see that the Word of God is powerful and changes lives. And many of their lyrics are written in such a way, they strike a special chord in our hearts.

Praise Becomes Part of Everyday Life
Worship isn’t just for Sunday morning! When we fill our homes, classrooms, and hearts with hymns, we carry words of praise throughout the week, keeping our focus on God's truth, no matter what we face.

We Remember We're Not the First
Hymns connect us to the testimonies of believers who have walked in faith before us. Their songs of trust, endurance, and joy in Christ encourage us to press on in our own journey knowing our Lord will help us the way He helped them.

Hymns Provide Comfort and Strength in Difficult Times
Life is full of challenges, but hymns remind us of God’s faithfulness and love when we need it most. Theologically rich lyrics often come to mind at just the right moment, offering peace and encouragement when we’re struggling.

We Experience More Teachable Moments With Our Children
I remember several hymns from my childhood and perhaps you do, too. Children tend to love hymns and learn them quicker than we realize!  This opens the door for meaningful discussions about faith, Scripture, and God’s character.

Relationships Becomes Deeper and More Meaningful
Modern worship songs (that are biblically sound) are great but hymns offer something unique—depth, doctrine, and the stories of those who have gone on before us. When we use these as an edification tool, as well as a tool for praise, we embracing God's plan for hymns beyond the pew and experience the edification and sanctification described in Colossians 3:16 and Ephesians 5:18-19.

Hymns are a powerful way to keep God’s Word close, deepen our love for Jesus, and pass on a lasting faith to future generations.
