From the Heart of a Teenager: My Jesus, I Love Thee

Feb 12, 2023

The remarkable thing about the hymn, "My Jesus, I Love Thee" is that this passionate and tender declaration of love for the Savior didn't come from the pen of an adult hymn writer, it came the pen of a 16 year old teenager, William Featherstone, shortly after his conversion.

We don't know much else about William -- we know he went to a Methodist church in Montreal and we know that he passed away while he was just 27 -- but we do know all that truly mattered: We know he loved Jesus.

Let this be a reminder to make our love for Jesus the main thing others remember about us after we've gone on to meet the Lord.

My Jesus, I Love Thee

by William Featherstone

My Jesus, I love thee, I know thou art mine;
for thee all the follies of sin I resign;
my gracious Redeemer, my Savior art thou;
if ever I loved thee, my Jesus, 'tis now.

I love thee because thou hast first loved me
and purchased my pardon on Calvary's tree;
I love thee for wearing the thorns on thy brow;
if ever I loved thee, my Jesus, 'tis now.

I'll love thee in life, I will love thee in death,
and praise thee as long as thou lendest me breath,
and say when the death dew lies cold on my brow:
If ever I loved thee, my Jesus, 'tis now.

In mansions of glory and endless delight,
I'll ever adore thee in heaven so bright;
I'll sing with the glittering crown on my brow:
If ever I loved thee, my Jesus, 'tis now.
