A Hymn for Freezing Weather

Jan 30, 2023

Ah, January in the midwest!

The freezing cold temps we've been experiencing here have got me thinking a lot about sunshine and especially about various hymns that have to do with sunshine.

While the Christian life is hardly all sunshine and roses in the fluffy, trivial sense, knowing Jesus does bring us precious moments of spiritual comfort and warmth that only the Light of the World can give.

The hymn "Sunshine In My Soul" describes these moments of comforts well and were written by someone who knew both the cold of trials and the comforting warmth that comes from a relationship with Christ.

Although she suffered from back pain most of her life due to a spinal injury, the hymn-writer Eliza Hewitt superintended Sunday School for years and wrote a number of hymns including My Faith Has Found a Resting Place, More About Jesus, When We All Get to Heaven and at least two hymns about our heavenly sunshine: Stepping in the Light and Sunshine in My Soul.

If you're ready for a little more sunlight today, consider Eliza's words below:

Sunshine In My Soul

by Eliza Hewitt

There is sunshine in my soul today,
More glorious and bright
Than glows in any earthly sky,
For Jesus is my light.

Refrain:
O there’s sunshine, blessed sunshine,
When the peaceful happy moments roll:
When Jesus shows His smiling face,
There is sunshine in the soul.

There is music in my soul today,
A carol to my King,
And Jesus, listening, can hear
The songs I cannot sing.

There is springtime in my soul today,
For when the Lord is near,
The dove of peace sings in my heart,
The flowers of grace appear.

There is gladness in my soul today,
And hope and praise and love
For blessings which He gives me now,
For joys "laid up" above.
